Joy and the art of skiing

It’s been quite a while since I wrote for my blog. However, as the season approaches, I think about Skiing and my love for it. Opening the door to a new way of going down the mountain, skiing for me brings a sense of freedom and joy. The experience of joy is really an experience of when you are aligned with your Authentic Self, as opposed to the person or fake self.

What I find is that riding Skis allows me to just let go, be in my present self. Hand in hand with this presence is the experience of pure joy. This is a habit that can be cultivated and then carried over into your daily life. The skiboard shows the way to later reevaluate your daily life and make changes more towards joy. The more you know joy, the more it seeps into the rest of your life.

Happiness is usually outward focused. Driving in the country makes me happy, walking with my dog, being at a party. Joy, on the other hand, is internal. It does not depend on external circumstances to provoke it. Joy ignites when we allow ourselves to be free, to flow, to let ourselves go and to be present with our lives. Many ways to rekindle the joy and the more you experience, the stronger the connection becomes.

From the teachings of neuroplasticity, we are changeable. It becomes a matter of reprogramming our neural network. That just comes with repetition. Focus more on joy, have more joy until it becomes your default. It’s not so much work as putting your attention where we choose it to be.

Certain sports, of course, allow us to get into the Zone, where we no longer operate from our False selves, we let go completely, and joy results. The reason I love Skis is because this Zone experience happens so much faster than sports that require years of effort.

Like many sports, skiboarding becomes an art form, a projection of your creativity and joy as you ride down the slopes. This is my personal experience and every time I ride, I feel like I am creating a painting in the snow, plowing from one side to the other, I feel like I am flowing down the mountain. I know many of you skiers know what I’m talking about. For those who aren’t, give it a try and find out for yourself.
